A Note from the Editor

The parish computer system has suffered greatly this week, apparently due to a power outage Tuesday night.  We are operating with a somewhat pieced-together system.  One consequence of this set-up is that the Highlands Voice will be an abbreviated version this week.  Please come back next week for, hopefully, more complete news of the happenings at Immanuel Church Highlands and the surrounding area.

Need some details from an old article? If you no longer have your copy of a previous issue of the Highlands Voice, several months of issues are still retained on the parish website; click on Newsletter.  Also, I have a limited quantity of printed old issues in the parish office.  Let me know, if you can’t find what you need.

Choral Evensong this Sunday at four o’clock, sung by our faithful Girl and Boy Choristers, completes our annual observance of the Feast of All Saints.  While the word “saint” is often used to describe someone of heroic sanctity, an inspiring and memorable example from the past, the New Testament calls all of God’s people “saints.” This is reflected in the tradition of commemorating “All Faithful Departed” on November 2, also called “All Souls’ Day.”  Come pray with us, encourage our faithful young singers, and enjoy a beautiful candlelight reception in the Common Room after the service.  Bring a friend!

Christian Education:  The Grade 1 - 3 class has up to seven children attending and three rotating teachers (Mary Kegelman, Maria Madera, Laurie Hay) assisted by Elaine Kusik, Barbara Pyle and Lisa Folkert.  They teach a curriculum which was adapted from the Godly Play curriculum by Barbara Pyle.  It has two cycles so that each year a different cycle is taught with play, song and story integrated into a winning combination that the children truly benefit from.  Starting in September, they have worked through the stories of Abraham, Isaac, Moses, Joseph as well as talking about The Good Shepherd and the Eucharist, and weaving the questions of Who is God and Who is Jesus throughout.

And now here's a question for you all – can you name the three men who were thrown into the fiery furnace?  If you don't know, come to the class on November 18th, and the storyteller will tell you!  We are truly blessed that our children are being led through God's Word, our HisStory, in so careful, caring, and effective a way!

Pray for these children, their parents, and their teachers.

Help for your Study Time:  If you are not familiar with the Interfaith Resource Center, I urge you to visit.  Whether you are involved in teaching at any level, or want material for your own use, you will find a wealth of information at IRC.  Immanuel is a member, so there is no additional cost for any parishioner to use the materials.  In addition to books, there is an extensive collection of videos, CDs, activity programs, church plays, etc.  The Center is located at St. Albans Church on Wilson Road, and is open Mondays through Thursdays 9 a.m. - 4 p.m., and Fridays 9 a.m. - 2 p.m.  If you have any questions, call Paula Hartzell, the director, at 302-477-970. You can search the catalog at the web page:  www.interfaithresourcecenter.com.

Four Outreach Opportunities:

Sunday, November 11th Prepare and serve Sunday Breakfast for Homeless Folks at Sts. Andrews and Matthews  (SsAM).  Immanuel’s families and individuals have enjoyed this outreach to the poorer members of our community.  Immanuel serves breakfast at SsAM about 6 times a year in rotation with over a dozen other churches.  Contact Sue Welles if you would like to do this in November or if you have questions.

Friendship House needs warm hats, gloves, scarves, and cotton work gloves for homeless people.  Towels will also be collected for the transitional housing programs.  A collection box is under the table in the foyer.

Sailors’ Watch Cap knitting instructions are on the foyer cabinet.  These caps and other items will go into Christmas-at-Sea ditty boxes during November.  The Seamen's Center of the Port of Wilmington distributes 5000 ditty boxes to sailors during December.       Sue Welles, Outreach Ministry

Give Thanks with a Grateful Heart!  United Thank Offering (UTO) envelopes and boxes are in the foyer.   These offerings are a collection of our daily thanksgivings for all the blessings we have from God.  The money is used to fund Episcopal missions nationally and world-wide.  The offering boxes are also a special way for children to give in response to daily blessings!  A report of last year's grants is on the foyer table. We will offer the UTO thanksgivings at the Eucharist on Sunday, December 16.
